Sudoku
The Japanese Sudoku puzzles are deceptively simple. While it’s relatively easy to program a sudoku-solver, things get slightly more complicated when programming a sudoku puzzle generator. This one, implemented in Java, can generate valid puzzles on three levels of difficulty, with and without symmetrical layouts. Sudokus were becoming wildly popular around 2005, and began appearing in all self-respecting newspapers. This implementation was sold to interested websites in Norway, Switzerland, and Italy, and I was interviewed about the programming for an article in the Copenhagen chapter of Mensa’s magazine.
